GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: 

A postdoctoral position for candidates interested in rare disease research and gene therapy is available in the laboratory of Dr. Yulia Grishchuk at the Center for Genomic Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. The laboratory focuses on the neurobiology and therapy development for an orphan disease beta-propeller protein associated neurodegeneration.

We are looking for highly motivated recent PhD graduates with a background in neuroscience or autophagy/lysosomal biology or gene therapy and experience with mouse models and/or iPSCs.

Candidates will be directly involved in designing and conducting experiments, performing data analysis and reports. Other responsibilities include presenting data at the meetings, mouse colony management and supervising students. He/she will work with under-graduate students, post-docs, technicians, and collaborators within the Harvard community and outside. Together with conducting a primary research project, a supportive role in other collaborative projects in the lab is strongly anticipated.

The initial contract is for one year, and continuation of the position is dependent on performance.

The laboratory is located on the main MGH campus in downtown Boston, MA. The research environment at MGH is extensive and collaborative. The MGH Research Institute is the largest hospital-based research enterprise in the United States. Postdoctoral fellows at MGH have joint appointment at Harvard Medical School with access to multiple educational and research resources.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting experiments using mouse and cellular models of BPAN
  • Maintain mouse colony and generate experimental cohorts, perform all necessary procedures and testing in mice;
  • Create and maintain electronic lab records and inventories;
  • Establish, characterize, maintain and conduct experiments in cell models of BPAN
  • Coordinate research activities with collaborators and communicate samples and data sharing and exchange;
  • Training of new lab-members and supervising under-graduate students
  • Preparing posters and manuscripts and presenting data at scientific conferences

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

  • PhD in molecular biology, biotechnology/bioengineering, neuroscience or related fields is required.
  • Advanced skillset in neuroscience, cell biology or gene therapy and previous experience with rodent models
  • Previous experience working with in-vitro models
  • Previous experience working with iPCSs is a plus
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical methods
  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced, highly collaborative and supportive environment
  • Ability to adapt to shifting priorities in response to changing deadlines and the needs of the lab
  • First (or co-first) author of one or more peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and time-management
  • Excellent quantitative and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to work well in collaborative environment
