The Talkowski Laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic candidate to join our group. Our group explores the impact of genomic changes on human neurodevelopment and neuropsychiatric disorders, while also applying innovations in sequencing technology to improve genetic diagnostics.




Laboratory Maintenance

  • Managing the tissue culture core by assisting in maintenance of instruments, reagents, supplies and samples.
  • Conducting Experimental Protocols
  • Must be comfortable working with biological specimens (e.g., tissue, blood, cells) from a variety of specimens (e.g., human, mouse, invertebrates)
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, library production, sample archiving, tissue culture, etc.)
  • Executes protocols of non-routine experiments in coordination with the TC team
  •  Assists supervisor with determining the most suitable methodology
  •  May develop modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols, or new procedures
  • Perform routine iPSC culture maintenance and differentiation according to established protocols
  • Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques

Data Management

  • Maintains electronic laboratory notebook
  • Organizes and summarizes acquired data
  • Conducts analysis of results using scientific and statistical techniques, and may begin interpretation of results
  • Prepares and presents reports to TC team on a regular basis.
  • Plans and organize experiments in coordination with the rest of the team.

     Participation in Publication

  • May perform independent literature searches
  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
  • Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation

Laboratory Training

  • Quickly adapt to new procedures and protocols
  • Orients and trains new Research Technicians, Students and Fellows
  • Keeps updated with lab and safety trainings
  • Quickly familiarize with software and programs used in the lab for day to day work.




  • Has basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics
  • Has 3 or more years working knowledge of molecular biological techniques (e.g., reagent preparation, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR) and cell biology technique ( e.g., routine cell maintenance protocols, differentiation protocol, cell-based assay)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise others
  • Ability to work independently and display initiative to introduce innovations to research study
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines
  • Functions with speed, precision, and an understanding of theory behind experiments and procedures.



BA/BS Required; MS preferred.



Requires 3+ years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience.



May supervise Laboratory Assistants, Technicians and Technologists.
