The Talkowski Laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking a motivated, enthusiastic candidate to join our research group. Our research group explores the impact of genomic alterations on human neurodevelopment and neuropsychiatric disorders, and the application of innovations in sequencing technology to genetic diagnostics.
Laboratory Maintenance
* Maintains and orders supplies
* Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (e.g., pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.).
* Prepares and maintains lab reagents, chemicals, instruments and equipment
* Routinely check medium, reagents, and plastic wares for cell culture experiments
Conducting Experimental Protocols
* Must be comfortable working with biological specimens (e.g., tissue, blood, cells) from a variety of specimens (e.g., human, mouse, invertebrates)
* Performs basic design and modification of protocols
* Assists supervisor with determining the most suitable methodology
* Participates in the design of experiments or field work
* May develop modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols, or new procedures
* Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed
* Perform molecular genomics procedures as assigned (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, library production, sample archiving, tissue culture, etc)
* Perform routine iPSC culture maintenance and differentiation according to established protocols
* Executes protocols of non-routine experiments
* Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques
Data Management
* Maintains laboratory notebook
* Conducts analysis of results, and may begin interpretation of results
* Calculates, transcribes and analyzes data
* Prepares and presents reports
* Organizes and summarizes acquired data, using scientific and statistical techniques
Participation in Publication
* May perform independent literature searches
* Prepares written and/or verbal status reports
* Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation
* Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation
* Assist with organizing materials for publication or presentation

Laboratory Training
* Quickly adapt to new procedures and protocols
* Orients and trains new Research Technicians, Students and Fellows
* Has basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics
* Has 2 or more years working knowledge of molecular biological techniques (e.g., reagent preparation, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR)
* Excellent communication skills
* Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to supervise others
* Ability to work independently and display initiative to introduce innovations to research study
* Ability to identify problems and develop solutions
* Ability to prioritize tasks and set deadlines
* Functions with speed, precision and an understanding of theory behind tests and procedures.
BA/BS Required; MS preferred
Requires 3+ years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience.
May supervise Laboratory Assistants, Technicians and Technologists.
